Water Pipes Replacing Old Pipes

You should check your pipes in your home often to determine if they need replacing. Over time, water pipes can eventually corrode. If you dont catch it early, they could end up leaking and cause thousands of dollars of water damage to your home. The cost to replace your water pipes on a home that is around 1500 sqft should cose between $2k and $15k, depending on how hard the pipes are to access and if you need to break through walls or concrete to get to them.

If you have a brand new home, checking the pipes regularly is not necessary unless you suspect there is an issue, but if your home is around 50 years old, you should be inspecing them at least once a year. The most common places to check are basements, crawlspaces, untility rooms and under your kitchen and bathroom sinks.

Look for stains around the walls and the ground surrounding the pipes. Even if the pipe is not wet or there is no evidence of leaking at the current moment, if there are stains near the pipe and there was never a leak before, this could indicate that the pipes are leaking occasionally. Check the tubing for discoloration, dimmples, corrosion, calcium buildup and anything else that might look out of the ordinary. Also be on the look out for leaks, even the smallest ones. A small leak can easily turn into a big leak at any moment.

Check the color of the water that comes out of your faucets and bathtub. When the color of the water has a tint of brown or yellow, this can mean that the pipes are rusty from the inside. If you catch any of the above mentioned situations, be sure to call a plumber or contractor to inspect your situation. Many contractors will also specialize in other home related issues and it may be wise to have them do an over all inspection on anything else that may need to be fixed in the future. Its not uncommon to also have your contractor inspect your roofing, electrical, plumbing and sewage.
